We’ve been talking about listening strategies and used the script called The Blame by Simon Parke. We looked at how listening strategies are used in conversation and how they could be improved. These were the discussion questions.
We also started working on creating our own scripts that incorporate good listening strategies into it. What fun!! The creativity was catchy! I’m looking forward to the next step which will be to record the audio and post them on our wiki.

Happy New Year everyone!!
We’re back into the swing of things after our 2 week break. It was great spending time with family and friends and enjoying time participating in our favorite winter outdoor activities!
We did a little spin on a traditional journal activity upon our return to school. Firstly, everyone brainstormed 10 words that they would use to describe a highlight of their holiday. Once that was complete, they went back and added some descriptive details and turned their word into a phrase or couple of sentences.
Enjoy catching up on everyone’s holiday!

We’ve been talking about the trait of VOICE and decided to write letters to the big red guy using a voice selected at random. It was a lot of fun and the students came up with some fantastic ideas!
Enjoy!
and Happy Holidays!!

We’ve just read RESISTING HITLER by Susan Campbell Bartoletti in our theme about taking a stand. We’ve been also talking a lot about making connections. Comment on this post about some other text-to-text connections you can make for other people who have made sacrifices for a just cause. In your post, talk about who the person is and what they did that stood up for themselves or others. (note: it doesn’t have to be someone who is famous, it could be a local hero)

Here’s hoping everyone had a fantastic summer vacation. I’m ready to go for another year of fun and excitement!
We’re working with a new literacy program, called Nelson Literacy. Our first unit is called STEP UP. It looks like it’s going to be a great way to start the year. There are some really inspiring stories to uncover!
As I mentioned in the intro letter, you might want to check out the Historica Minutes website (one minute documentaries). Happy viewing!

On May.22 2009 the Swan River Valley had a track and field event, held at the Swan Valley Reginal School. When we arrived at the school it started to snow/freezing rain. Some people were huddled together in blankets other people were inside the school in the lobby. Lots of people had multiple layers on and more layers. Around 11:00 it started to rain we were all begging the teachers if we could cancel it, but they said no. So we all felt like this day would never end!!! After lunch around 12:00 the teachers agreed that it was to cold, so they canclled the track and field. So we all went back to school so happy, (going to school happy?? That never happens) We arrived at school and started doing some work. That was the most interesting day ever!!!!
